For a healthy adult, the **absolute maximum acetaminophen dose is 4,000 mg in 24 hours**, counting **all** prescription and over-the-counter products. Many clinicians recommend staying at or below **3,000 mg/day** when self-treating, especially for more than a few days.
Typical maximum per dose: **1,000 mg**, spaced at least **6 hours apart**.
Use a lower limit or seek medical advice if you have liver disease, regularly drink alcohol, weigh under 50 kg (110 lb), are older/frail, or take interacting medicines. Avoid combining products containing acetaminophen (also labeled **APAP** or paracetamol).
