**Pick based on what you do most:**
**Choose ChatGPT if** you want the broadest single tool. It's the most "does everything" option: image generation built in, the best voice mode, solid data analysis on uploaded files, a large ecosystem of guides and community knowledge. If you're not sure what you'll use it for, this is the lowest-regret default.
**Choose Claude if** your work is mostly text and code. The common feedback is that it writes with less filler and follows long, fiddly instructions more faithfully — useful for editing, drafting, and thinking through documents. Claude Code has a real following among developers. Tradeoff: no native image generation and a thinner feature set around the edges.
**Choose Gemini if** you live in Google's ecosystem or work with a lot of media. Gmail/Docs/Drive integration is genuinely useful, it handles video and long documents well, NotebookLM is a legitimately distinctive tool for research, and the subscription often bundles with Google storage — the best value per dollar.
**A few things worth knowing:**
- All three are roughly $20/month, month-to-month, no lock-in. This is a reversible decision, which lowers the stakes considerably.
- The free tiers are good now. Spend a week running your actual work through all three before paying for any of them. Your real tasks will tell you more than any comparison article.
- They leapfrog each other every few months. Whatever's "best" today may not be in six months, and any specific claim I make about relative capability could already be stale.
- The differences between them are smaller than the difference between using one well and using one poorly. Learning to give good context and iterate matters more than the logo.
**If you want one answer:** ChatGPT, for breadth — unless you're a heavy writer or developer, in which case Claude, or deeply embedded in Google Workspace, in which case Gemini.
